GMC Reveals Sierra EV; Denali Edition 1 Takes Point
2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1
GMC has been making waves with their recent electrification, and now they’re plugging into their popular Sierra line of pickups for their next EV: the 2024 Sierra EV.
The Sierra EV follows in the footsteps of the recent GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV. Similar to those, this new model will be first served up as an aptly named Denali “Edition 1” trim, followed in the 2025 model year by the Sierra EV AT4 and Elevation trims.
That also means the SIerra EV will be host to the first electric Denali, GMC’s go-to luxury trim found at the top of their model ranges. The Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 is unsurprisingly equipped with all the amenities, accouterments and “bells and whistles” you could ever want, but at its core is GM’s Ultium Platform, used to underpin many of the brand’s EVs– and even the upcoming Honda Prologue.
Ultium power means 754 horsepower and up to 785 lb-ft of torque (in “Max Power” mode), 9,500 lbs of towing, and 400 miles of range on a full charge. Power is put down through front and rear electric drive units, creating the Sierra’s “e4WD” system. It rides on a standard Air Ride Adaptive Suspension, able to raise or lower the truck by about two-inches. Regen braking and One-Pedal Driving also return, as does GM’s “Super Cruise” hands-free driving system. Oh, and the Hummer EV’s “CrabWalk” 4-wheel steering is also back. Because, you know, why not?
Power is restored through its 800 Volt DC Public Fast Charging architecture, capable of up to 350kW. That means a potential 100 miles of range recouped in roughly 10 minutes. GMC is yet to confirm the exact size of the Sierra EV’s battery pack.
The exterior is about what we’d expect out of an electric Sierra, and that’s certainly not a bad thing. It takes the general shape and refines it into a more aero, modern and LED-infused aesthetic. It’s especially noticeable in the face, where the GMC logo now rests upon a flat, body matched grille surface, bookend by angled headlights. Upfront you’ll find the “eTrunk”– a fancy way of saying “frunk.” In back you’ll find a 5-foot, 11-inch cargo bed and a MultiPro Midgate, allowing for 9-feet of storage from cab to tailgate when open, expandable to a load floor of nearly 11-feet with the load-stop open. This comes standard on the EV Denali Edition 1, which in of itself is exclusively offered as a Crew Cab model.
The interior is loaded from top to bottom– literally, with the panoramic fixed glass roof headlining the whole affair. The cabin is adorned with a new quilting pattern “invocative of the vehicle’s bold front end,” aluminum trimmings and open-pore wood trim along the instrument panel. Of course, what’s a luxury electric means gizmos and gadgets; here you’ll find a 16.8-inch infotainment screen and 11-inch driver’s information display.
