Long Term Updates

Time to get to know one of the newest members of our long-term fleet a little better, this 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.

The Cross Sport is the 2-row version of Volkswagen’s biggest SUV, the Atlas; and comes with much more stylish bodywork.

Our SEL tester sticks with the base 2.0-liter I4 turbo engine, but adds 4MOTION all-wheel-drive. Seeing how well its 235–horsepower is able to get this utility moving, is something we’ll be keeping an eye on.

We’re still getting used to the idea of a 4-cylinder turbo in a midsize SUV, but it’s quickly becoming the norm because, as we’re seeing in this Atlas Cross Sport, the low-end torque gets things moving in a hurry. Then, once it’s up to highway speed, it keeps up just fine.

SEL trim means it’s well equipped with a panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, and a great-looking Audi-esque digital instrument display; all of which make for a pleasant time behind the wheel so far.

Mileage: 1,200

We’ve only had 2-months of travel time in this 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, but have covered 1,200-miles so far.

Even with the 2-tone theme, the interior is not the most inviting, but it sure is comfortable and spacious feeling, even in the back seat of this 2-row 5-passenger utility.

Highly functional as well; rear seatbacks fold fully flat, turning it into a big, easy to load cargo hauler, and the MIB3 infotainment system is both intuitive to operate and quick to respond.

We have started to hear a few grumblings of wanting more power, but most on the staff have found the 2.0-liter I4 turbo’s 235-horsepower adequate, and appreciate the 21.8 miles-per-gallon average.

Only some minor late winter snow for the Cross Sport to deal with; and 4MOTION handled it seamlessly.  It’s the kind of vehicle you can drive and never even know if it has all-wheel-drive or not; as you don’t really feel it working, it just provides the grip you need when and where you need it.

Mileage: 2,293

Now to wrap up our 3-month spring fling with this 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. We put 2,293-miles on this midsize utility during that brief time, and its smooth ride and excellent rear seat room made it a great day trip vehicle for 5 passengers and all of their gear.

The 235-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo provided adequate if not thrilling acceleration, and a good 22.1 miles-per-gallon.

The Cross Sport is the right size vehicle at the right time; but unfortunately…we are out of time.
