2021 Lexus LC500 Convertible

Lexus leads off our coverage of AutoMobility LA with the drop-dead gorgeous droptop 2021 LC500 Convertible.  The exterior of the new LC Convertible stylishly blends the coupe’s unique roofline with the character of a convertible, achieving an exquisite profile with the top open or closed. Power for the front engine, rear-wheel-drive LC Convertible comes via a 471-horsepower 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine paired with a seamless Direct-Shift 10-speed automatic transmission.  The 2021 Lexus LC500 Convertible goes on sale in the summer of 2020.

2021 Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring

Lincoln will follow the recent launch of its compact Corsair luxury crossover with a plug-in hybrid version. The 2021 Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring is expected to have an electric-only range of about 25 miles, and it will be the first PHEV utility in its price class to use an electric motor in the rear for all-wheel drive. Combined with a 2.5-liter I4 gas engine, total output is pegged at 266 horsepower. It will arrive in showrooms next summer.

Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion Concept

Volkswagen brought it’s ID. Space Vizzion Concept to the 2019 LA Auto Show as an expression of their latest ideas about now spacious and versatile an all-electric utility might be. Since space for a large gas engine is not needed, proportions and height can be better utilized to carry people and cargo. The concept has an 82 kWH battery and VW claims it could have a range of up to 300 miles between charges. It is the 7th ID. Concept and the brand says it could reach production for Europe and North America.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-e

While it was unveiled a few days before the LA show opened, one of the most talked about new models continues to be the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-e, Ford’s first purpose built all-electric vehicle. Depending on model, maximum range is expected to be 300 miles between charges, with the GT variant capable of 0-60 MPH in 3.5 seconds. It will arrive in showrooms in about a year.

2020 Nissan Sentra

Nissan has unveiled an all-new Sentra compact sedan for 2020. With a more dramatic outside, adding additional Altima and Maximia details including LED headlights, and a more upscale inside, with a dash top touch screen, the new Sentra is one more weapon for holding back the tidal wave of SUVs. Under the hood is an uprated 2.0-liter I4 engine rated at 149 horsepower mated to an improved CVT transmission. Automatic emergency braking and a host of other active safety features are standard on all trims. Sales start early in the new year.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime

The fifth-generation of Toyota’s compact RAV4 crossover, on the market for only a year, and already available as a conventional hybrid, is now being joined by a plug-in variant, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime. It is estimated that the Prime will have an electric only range of 39 miles, but is also projected to have a 0-60 MPH of only 5.8 seconds. The Prime will be available next summer.

Hyundai Vision T Plug-in Hybrid SUV Concept

Hyundai showed another part of their vision for the future with the Vision T Plug-in Hybrid SUV Concept.  It has what they call a “new urban adventurer SUV design.”  Beyond the angular looks, the air shutter grille can control airflow to the powertrain, helping aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.  In case you’re counting… The Vision T is the seventh in a series of Hyundai Design Center concepts.

2020 MINI John Cooper Works GP

Mini took advantage of the 2019 LA Auto Show to unveil the road rally racing inspired, two-seat 2020 MINI John Cooper Works GP, the fastest production MINI to date. Based on the MINI 3-door, the John Cooper Works GP is powered by a 306-HP Turbocharged I4, the most powerful engine the brand has ever fielded. It includes an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission with integrated mechanical differential lock for the front wheels. As proof of performance, MINI estimates 0-60 MPH in 5.2 seconds for this true cubic sports car. Sales begin next summer.

2020 Porsche Taycan 4S

Porsche’s reputation for sportiness is getting another jolt with the new Taycan 4S.  It follows the global debuts of the Taycan Turbo and Taycan Turbo S all-electric, four-door sports sedans in Seprtember.  The Taycan 4S is now the starting point of Porsche’s first all-electric vehicle range, and offers two levels of power. The standard Taycan 4S generates up to 522-hp with overboost power.  Choose the Performance Battery Plus and that numbers jumps to 562-hp. Either way, Porsche says the Taycan 4S accelerate to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds with a top track speed of 155 mph.

Porsche 99X Electric

The Porsche 99X Electric is the brand’s first all-electric racing car.  It’s not just about chasing the checkered flag.  The Porsche 99X Electric will be a development platform for future all-electric Porsche production road cars.

2020 Porsche Macan Turbo. 

The crowd in LA also saw the US premiere of the 2020 Porsche Macan Turbo.  With 434-hp it leads Porsche’s compact SUV model line-up.

BMW always has a lot to show, and this year is no exception.  BMW M8 Gran Coupe, BMW M2 CS and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe are making World Premieres in LA.

2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe

The 2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe will come in two options…the 600-horsepower M8 or the 617 horsepower M8 Competition.  Both are longer, wider and higher than the 8 Series Coupe. Opting for the Competition model means 0-to-60 mph goes by in 3.0 seconds… with a top speed up to 190 mph.

2020 BMW M2 CS

Also making a World Premiere is the 2020 BMW M2 CS.  BMW says the idea behind this high-performance CS model is a car that can be driven every day but also optimized for the racetrack.  Along with Adaptive M Suspension and available M Ceramic Brakes, engineers used CFRP body panels to save weight and improved the aero package.   Production is limited.  They’re scheduled to hit the market in April 2020.

2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. 

Another World Premiere from the Bavarians is the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe.  The options for this sporty four-door are the 228-hp BMW 228i xDrive Gran Coupe or the 301-hp BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe.   models arrive in dealers in March 2020.  There’s more here than just power.  The 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe also features connectivity and driver assistance systems,  such as Blind Spot Detection and Frontal Collision Warning. Look for them at dealers in March 2020.

2021 Kia Seltos

The small crossover market is getting a little bigger with the 2021 Kia Seltos.  It slips in between Soul and Sportage in Kia’s utility line-up.  There are two engine options: a 146 horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder, or a 175-horsepower 1.6-liter turbo.  All-wheel drive with torque vectoring are available.  The 2021 Kia Seltos goes on-sale in the U.S. early next year.

2020 Mazda CX-30

Mazda’s newest crossover made its U.S. debut in Los Angeles, after first appearing at the Geneva Motor Show in March.  The 2020 Mazda CX-30 slides in between the CX-3 and CX-5. This sleek compact crossover will be propelled by 186-hp when it goes on sale starting at $21,900.

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia

They rolled out the red carpet for the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio to make their North American debuts.  The tech has been updated in these Italian beauties… including a faster 8.8-inch touchscreen display and a new available Advanced Driver Assistance System.  Both arrive in showrooms before the end of the year.

2020 Fiat 500X Sport

More Italian flare arrived with the 2020 Fiat 500X Sport.  While there’s definitely a sporty emphasis with the accents inside and out… the X brings standard all-wheel drive and an automatic rear-axle disconnect.  Powering this stylish runabout is a 177 horsepower 1.3-liter turbocharged inline-4. It joins the Pop, Trekking and Trekking Plus models in the Fiat 500X model line.

2020 Acura MDX PMC Edition

The 2020 Acura MDX PMC Edition draped in Valencia Red Pearl combines premium features offered in the Advance Package with the sporty characteristics of the A-Spec line.  These will be assembled by hand by the same master technicians who build the NSX supercar at Acura’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio.  Only 300 vehicles will be built for the U.S.  Expect to pay in the mid-$60,000 range for one of these limited editions early next year.

"Vision Mercedes Simplex". 

Mercedes-Benz Design showed the "Vision Mercedes Simplex".  The sculpture showcases the heritage and future of the luxury brand.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63

The three-pointed star also made news about their moving vehicles. S-class luxury and performance come together in the new Mercedes-AMG GLS 63. The 4.0-liter V8 biturbo with an integrated EQ Boost starter-generator produces 603-hp.  The AMG expertise is also applied to the all-wheel drive, 9-speed automatic transmission and active air suspension.

The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S roars with the same power and an EQ Boost starter-generator for the first time.

2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4MATIC

The Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4MATIC also shared the spotlight.  Their first fully electric vehicle appeared as a concept in 2016… and made its world premiere in Stockholm last year.  We now know it will start at $67,900 when it arrives in U.S. dealers in early next year.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer

The global debut was in Shangai this past spring, but now the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer is coming to a North American audience.  The sports car-inspired DNA runs from the roofline to the tires of this crossover.  Chevrolet announced pricing will start under $20,000 when they arrive in showrooms in the spring.

2021 Aston Martin DBX

After 106-years in business, Aston martin is venturing into the world of SUV’s.  Sports car inspiration in the form of a luxury SUV is the idea behind the 2021 Aston Martin DBX.  Powering this shapely ute is the same 542-horsepower 4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 found in the DB11 and Vantage.  The result is 0 to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 181 mph.  The price for this glamourous roomy performance is $189,900 when it goes on sale next year.

2020 Audi RS Q8

Roomy sportiness arrived in the all-new Audi RS Q8.  It’s their first RS-SUV from Audi in America 4.0-liter V8 biturbo cranks out 591-hp… capable of taking on the renowned Nürburgring racetrack with an official time of 7 minutes and 42.2 seconds.

2020 Audi e-tron Sportback. 

The shift toward electrification was on display with the Audi e-tron Sportback.  This coupish SUV is the second model in e-tron product line. Audi says expect a range of 277 electric miles when it goes on sale next year.

2020 Hyundai IONIQ

At the 2019 LA Auto Show Hyundai launched their updated IONIQ lineup. The IONIQ Hybrid, PHEV, and Electric models all gain freshened exteriors and interiors. All cars also add new infotainment and active safety features. The biggest take away however involves the 2020 IONIQ Electric which debuts with a longer 170 mile range between charges, thanks to a 36% increase in battery capacity.


Hyundai RM19

In conjunction with the LA Auto Show, Hyundai introduced the RM19 Racing Midship Sports Car prototype. This is the latest in a series of N prototype “Racing Midship” models and follows the RM14, RM15 and RM16. Hyundai says the RM project’s key design differentiator provides supercar-level handling balance and low-polar-moment-of-inertia agility for outstanding connection to the tarmac at all speeds and driving conditions. 


Green Car Awards

Along with all the glitz and glamour, the LA Auto Show is also the site to recognize vehicles that are environmentally friendly.   The 2020 Honda CR-V has been named Green SUV of the Year by Green Car Journal.  The all-new 2020 CR-V Hybrid will be Honda's first hybrid SUV in America using the company’s two-motor hybrid system and new all-wheel drive.  While the 2020 Honda CR-V went on-sale in October, the hybrid arrives early next year.

Green Car Journal has also named the 2020 Toyota Corolla and Corolla Hybrid Green Car of the Year.  Again, the hybrid technology helped the Corolla win this distinction.  The Green Car of the Year recognition began in 2006.  The winners are chosen by a panel of Green Car Journal editors and invited representatives from efficiency and environmental organizations.
