Drivers of heavy vehicles may have to go a little lighter on the accelerator.  U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced a proposal to limit how fast vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 26,000 pounds can go.  This includes trucks, buses, and multipurpose passenger vehicles. The proposal calls for new vehicles in this category to be equipped with devices limiting their speed.  In a press release, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says they’re considering 60, 65, and 68 miles per hour, as well as other speeds.  Transportation officials say the idea could save lives and more than $1 billion in fuel costs a year.   At this point it’s a proposal.  Transportation officials point out the actual maximum speed would still have to be decided.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says they’re looking into the possibility with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
