Singapore first city to offer driverless taxis
August 25, 2016
The first public use of driverless taxis is underway in Singapore.
nuTonomy, the software developer behind the technology, has launched its autonomous taxi service in Singapore's one-north business district, and is offering free rides to select residents. The taxis, modified Mitsubishi i-MiEVs and Renault Zoes, can be hailed through nuTonomy's smartphone app. Though the vehicles will drive themsevles, a nuTonomy engineer will be in the car at all times, and can take over in emergency situations.
nuTonomy's goal is to use this launch as a trial run. They aim to have a commercial fleet of autonmous taxis on the streets of Singapore by 2018.
