NHTSA announces Federal Automated Vehicles Policy
Federal regulators want to know more about vehicles that can drive themselves before you get behind the wheel.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced the Federal Automated Vehicles Policy. It includes a 15-point Safety Assessment to achieve what NHTSA calls “robust design”. This new policy is aimed at auto manufacturers and other companies involved with bringing automated vehicles to the market. Federal regulators say they recognize the great potential of these innovations, but they want to make sure “these technologies are safely introduced”. They say the policy will be updated annually to ensure it keeps up with the changes in driver-assistance systems.
