Toyota has recently unveiled the newest generation of their Prius compact hybrid, boasting a next-level hybrid system and some dashing new looks.

Yes, the venerable Toyota Prius is receiving an overhaul for 2023. It’s no surprise that the Toyota Prius, one of the most prolific names in the hybrid genre, is returning for a new generation; but what may shock some is just how cool the new one looks.

The 2023 model inherits the “monoform silhouette” first seen on the original Prius, but sharpened for the modern age. The new body is spearheaded by a “hammerhead shark-like design,” featuring angled headlights and daytime LEDs. The rear features new combination taillights accentuating the width of the rear deck. Overall, the 2023 Prius carries a simple, yet bold aesthetic.

The interior is equally simple, yet modern. The cockpit is largely monotone with a splash of light and color derived from the dash. That comes from the embedded infotainment system and driver’s display, as well as Toyota’s first illuminated warning system. The embedded ambient lighting is tethered to Toyota Safety Sense, alerting drivers through flashing lights and audible warnings.

Toyota’s first 2.0-liter Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) System will be available with the new Prius and it puts out some impressive numbers: about 220 horsepower. The standard Hybrid model (HEV) is expected to put out around 190 horsepower. It should be noted that this is the global reveal, and the US-specced model might have slightly different outputs, but we’re confident that the new Prius will be packing more heat regardless.

We expect to learn more about the US model soon. Stay tuned to MotorWeek for more updates and our upcoming coverage of the Los Angeles Auto Show!
