We recently covered a teaser put out by Maserati about their impending MC20 Cielo, a spyder variant of their latest super sports car; now, Maserati has officially pulled the covers off this new machine.

The MC20 Cielo can be broken down like so: MC stands for “Maserati Corse” (Corse meaning racing). The 20 refers to the year 2020, the year “that began the brand’s new era.” And Cielo, which means “sky,” is a tribute to the open-air nature of the spyder configuration, achieved through a unique retractable glass roof.

Specifically, Maserati says Cielo is meant to highlight “the fact that it is a model devoted to driving pleasure in the great outdoors, while maintaining all the prerogatives of the coupe.” The spyder is able to maintain the MC20’s super sport nomenclature thanks to the 3.0-liter V6 Nettuno engine, putting out 621 horses and 538 lb-ft of torque. That equates to a 2.9 second 0-60 mph time and a top speed of 202 mph; though, do keep in mind that the glass roof can only be operated at speeds at or under 31 mph.

We keep harping on the glass, but it really is the focus of the Cielo’s design; it’s outfitted with an electrochromic system that can transform from clear to opaque through the central control screen. Speaking of the interior, the Cielo is similar to the MC20 coupe. It features an optimized version of the High Premium Sonus faber audio system, as well as the Maserati Intelligent Assistant Multimedia system. Various Active Safety Systems are also in place, such as parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and an available autonomous brake, traffic sign recognition and new 360-degree camera.

Nothing has been confirmed regarding the 2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo, but we expect it to price out more than the current coupe’s $212,000 starting price.
