While it hasn't even had a formal press introduction yet, the all-new Ford Explorer has arrived with all of its lights flashing as the 2020 Ford Police Interceptor. Along with a switch from a front to a rear-wheel drive archetecture, the new Interceptor will come standard with a hybrid four-wheel drive powertrain that promises a big boost in fuel economy, and correspondingly a drop in operating costs, that every law enforcement budget will appreciate. The 3.3-liter Ecoboost V6 combined with an electric motor is expected to yield a Federal Combined fuel econony rating of 24 MPG, or 26% higher than their outgoing pursuit utility. It is probable that the hyrbid powertrain will also be offered in the civilian Explorer, along with a conventional 3.0-liter Ecoboost V6. Ford already commands 65% of the pursuit vehicle business here, and the 2020 Ford Police Interceptor likely locks up their market dominance for years to come.
