Honda is taking another step in protecting passengers in the event of a crash. They’ve announced engineers are developing their next generation airbags. They say this latest development will protect occupants in a wider range of front collisions, including crashes at an angle.
We’re used to seeing airbags that inflate from a single compartment. This new system uses three inflatable compartments… and center and one on each side. There’s also what they call a "sail panel” which they describe as “operating something like a baseball catcher's mitt… which catches and decelerates the occupant's head while also engaging the side chambers, pulling them inward to cradle and protect the head”. Honda plans on using these advanced airbags in the United States beginning next year.
