As the EPA reviews the rules for auto emissions, the process is changing. Automotive News is reporting the Director of the EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality, Christopher Grundler, says the process will include new screening methods to get a clearer view of how engines operate on the road. They also report him saying the EPA will buy consumer data to see how satisfied owners are with their fuel economy. President Trump ordered the EPA to reopen the midterm review. The deadline is April 1, 2018.
Toyota is teaming up with other organizations to develop driving technology. The company has announced new projects with eight institutions. The projects include connected systems and autonomous driving. Toyota plans to spend $35-million during the next 5 years on safety research.
Nissan is also thinking about safety technology. The company has announced Rear Door Alert. Much like GM’s system, it helps remind drivers to check the rear seat after the vehicle is parked. The reminder comes through a message on the center instrument panel and the horn honking. Their first vehicle to include the feature will be the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder. It goes on sale next month.
