2024 BMW X6 M60i xDrive

BMW has digitally unveiled the 2024 X5 and X6 utilities, boasting new looks and improved performance.

The X5 and X6 utilities have received appearance updates, particular upfront with new headlights and bumpers, as well as expanded standard equipment. On top of that, the lineup sees revised powertrains and electrification.

For starters, the X5 and X6 40i variants use a new turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, cranking out 40 more horsepower and 51 lb-ft of torque more than its predecessor. Total output is rated at 375 horsepower and up to 398 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain is mated up to an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission– a transmission used throughout the X5 and X6 line. All models will come with all-wheel drive (hence the “xDrive” name), minus the entry-level X5 sDrive40i, which uses a rear-wheel setup as standard.

The X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid is also bolstered by an updated 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine. It works in tandem with a stronger electric motor, bringing total output to 483 horsepower– up nearly 100 horsepower– and 516 lb-ft of torque. And despite the performance gains, BMW has simultaneously extended pure-EV range by about 10 miles, now up to 40 miles overall. This is derived from the lithium-ion battery packing 25.7kWh of usable energy on a full charge.

The M60i xDrive versions are powered by a newly developed TwinPower Turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine. It’s paired up to the 48V mild hybrid technology, conjuring up 523 horsepower and up to 553 lb-ft of torque. A 0 to 60 mph time of 4.2 seconds has been achieved in preliminary testing.

The X5 is spearheaded by a new design of BMW headlights and the iconic kidney grille, the latter of which can be illuminated for the first time as an option on the X5 xDrive50e and 40i models. The front air breathers have also been reshaped; and in the back, newly designed taillights. The X6 still very much nails the Sport Activity Coupe vibes, now with similarly updated headlights and a now-standard M Sport package, the latter of which contains an octagonal design element below the grille and additional black accents.

Inside either is BMW’s Curved Display, made up of a 12.3-inch information panel behind the steering wheel and an infotainment screen of 14.9-inches, housed in a monolithic, driver-centric unit. A newly designed dashboard also features an ambient light bar with a crystalline surface structure, offering up 15 different colors to set the mood. In the console, a new toggle gear selector and control panel arrive. It all comes together for a straightforward, yet elegant design– also thanks in part to the standard leather-like Sensafin upholstery.

The 2024 BMW X5 sDrive40i starts at $66,195 after delivery; the X5 xDrive50e starts at $73,495, with the M60i xDrive model starting at $90,295. The X6 xDrive40i can be had for $74,895 with delivery, with the M60i version fetching $94,595 to start.

A public debut is slated for The Amelia Concours d’Elegance in March, and production will follow shortly in April 2023 at the BMW Group Plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. And, of course, we can’t wait to get behind the wheel!
