Audi Vehicles Will Talk to Traffic Lights in the Near Future
Audi has announced the automobile industry's first use of Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication, and says it's ready to roll out on 2017 Q7, A4 and A4 allroad models.
The feature, called Traffic Light information, will allow the vehicle to communicate with traffic signals, and indicate a countdown from red to green while stopped. It works through the onboard LTE data connection that many Audis already have today, talking to advanced traffic management systems that monitor traffic light information. The feature is only available in select cities that are set up with such technology. But Audi hopes the infrastructure will expand in the future, and also hopes to add more to the functionality of the Traffic Light information system.
