Toyota GR86 Yuzu Special Edition is Very Yellow; GR Corolla Dev Vehicle Isn’t
April 4, 2025The Toyota GR86 isn’t shy of receiving the special edition treatment, with 2024’s TRUENO Edition and this year’s Hakone Edition occupying a third slot above the Base and Premium grades. 2026 will be no exception, as Toyota has debuted the Yuzu Special Edition.
Like the TRUENO, the Yuzu pays homage to a part of Toyota’s past, though this homage only goes back about a decade or so to the Scion FR-S Release Series 1.0, a predecessor to the 86. The Yuzu calls back to those Scion days with its titularly yellow paint, coating the vehicle outside while the shade finds its way inside to the contrast stitching and seat perforations.
But it’s not just aesthetics. Again, like the TRUENO and Hakone, the Yuzu is based on the GR86 Premium with the performance package. That means grabbier Brembo brakes and SACHS suspension dampers, upgrades we experienced firsthand in the TRUENO and believe complements the lightweight, lower power fun the 86 is meant to be about. Output from the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter flat-four remains a fine 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, sent to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or automatic. Should you be buying the Yuzu just for the looks, a body kit will be available to provide additional flair, as will a cat-back exhaust with GR-etched silver tips.
Recent improvements already made to the GR86, including Gazoo-researched throttle mapping retuning and engine torque control, should make it feel a little more alive; though at 2,811 pounds (2,851 with the auto), that 228 HP is enough for some tossin’ and turnin’.
Limited to just 860 units, the Yuzu Special Edition will arrive with other ‘26 GR86s this fall. No word on pricing just yet, though we assume it’ll be close to the TRUENO’s $36,405 starting price.
GR Corolla Development Vehicle
And not to be left out, the third member of the Gazoo Racing trio, the GR Corolla, has a little news of its own, albeit nothing production ready quite yet. Toyota has teased more GR Corolla goodness soon to come by flaunting a camo-ed up development vehicle. Despite the sharp pattern of red, white and black, discernable from the press photos are wicked looking vents on the front fenders, joined by newly designed vents on the hood. A large spoiler is mounted in back, no doubt part of the vehicle’s aerodynamic reworking.
Toyota also expects the production model of this development vehicle to have more torque and unique tuning. We should have more details this fall.
