There hasn’t been a ton of news coming out about the Toyota Corolla, though we suppose that’s very much a case of “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” This commuter car is a popular choice thanks to its reputation for affordability, availability and general reliability; a reputation that’s been built over many decades.

And Toyota is celebrating a part of that legacy with a new FX special edition. The FX is a nod back to the 1987 Corolla FX16, a fun-having hatchback we actually Road Tested back in the day.

The new Corolla FX, arriving for the 2025 model year sometime this fall, is based on the current SE grade, distinguishing itself from the pack with a few aesthetic differences. Outside, a rear spoiler and new 18-inch satin-black wheels with matching lug nuts are the primary features, along with a blacked-out roof and mirror caps. These changes will be less visible on the Midnight Black Metallic paint, one of three available finishes along with Ice Cap and Underground.

The interior is upholstered in Moonstone fabric, held together with orange stitching. All well and good, but the big news is a new 10.5-inch multimedia display, standard here on the FX and available on other trims; it’s joined by a 7-inch info screen behind the wheel and a wireless charging pad. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is also standard.

The FX doesn’t put any extra power down through its 2.0-liter, naturally-aspirated inline-four, still kicking at 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, nor is the FX some rear-wheel driven performance leap from the typical, and still standard here, front-wheel drive layout. That said, Toyota has outfitted this trim with lower springs, and the power steering has been tuned for sportier rotations.

Pricing on the 2025 Toyota Corolla FX, and the rest of the Corolla lineup for that matter, should be announced closer to launch.
