Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Returns for 2026
January 16, 2025It wasn’t too long ago when we gave the third-generation Subaru Crosstrek an official Road Test for its 24 model year debut; and it was soon followed by the Crosstrek Wilderness, expanding the outdoorsy Subaru trim family. But it’s been a while since we’ve tested the Crosstrek Hybrid since this most recent redesign didn’t launch with any electrified option.
That’s about to change, as 2026 sees the return of the Crosstrek Hybrid, and Subaru has divulged some of the electrified details. With availability slated for this fall, it won’t be long until we get our hands on one for a fresh Road Test.
The most important bits of new hardware are underneath; and rightfully so, as the rest of the Crosstrek Hybrid remains largely the same as the strictly-ICE variants. The powertrain retains Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, still mechanically coupled to both axles. Rotation is spurred by a 2.5-liter engine (a flat-four boxer design, of course), partnered with an eCVT with a pair of electric motors powered by a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. They synergize for a total system output of 194 horsepower, a small uptick from the 182 horsepower found in non-hybrid 2.5-liter units, and a marginal increase over the 152 HP pushed by 2.0-liter Crosstreks. And for clarity, this hybrid system is one that does not require any plugging in, though efficiency is yet to be disclosed.
Even without the Wilderness tag, the Crosstrek is reasonably capable at getting to the nearest trailhead; and the Crosstrek Hybrid aims to keep the same proficiency, its all-wheel output matched by 8.7 inches of ground clearance (same as a regular Crosstrek), X-MODE drive modes and Hill Descent Control.
Aside from the “Hybrid” badging, there’s not much differentiating it from the standard Crosstrek lineup, whereas the Wilderness models, for example, come clad with copper-colored accents, among other unique signifiers; though, the Hybrid does get two new hues to itself, Sand Dune Pearl and Citron Yellow Pearl, and a unique set of darkened 18-inch wheels. The interior is equally similar, headlined by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a tablet-oriented 11.6-inch STARLINK infotainment screen. The latest Subaru Eyesight suite completed the package, including a number of driver assistance and safety systems like Emergency Stop Assist, a new standard feature which will stop the vehicle, hazards on and doors unlocked, and call emergency services in the event the driver is unresponsive to adaptive cruise control alerts.
We’ll know more about the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, including pricing, as we get closer to launch.
