Rivian, the all-electric vehicle manufacturer, has just unveiled the second-generation R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV, offering more power and range, along with some additional tech.

The R1 models serve as Rivian’s flagship line, the R1S arriving not long after the R1T just a couple years ago. And today’s news of the second-gen outing comes just months after the debut of the R2, R3 and R3X models, bound for showrooms in the coming years.

Starting with the platform, Rivian is offering the Dual-, Tri- and Quad-Motor configurations;  at its Quad-Motor peak, a total output is rated at 1,025 horsepower and up to 1,198 lb-ft of torque, delivering an estimated 2.5 second 0-60 time. The Tri-Motor is nothing to scoff at, packing 850 horsepower, while the Dual-Motor puts out a very respectable 665 horsepower.

Immediate punch is an EV party trick that, while not as impressive as it once was, is still just as grin-inducing. But the most impressive numbers to some consumers are instead range estimates, which Rivian now projects is up to 420 miles with the Max battery pack and up to 330 with the Large pack. These, naturally, provide more endurance; however, the Standard pack offers up to 270 miles of range, EPA-estimated. New manufacturing practices make the batteries easier to assemble and service.

This next-gen platform brings in a redesigned heat pump-based thermal system, said to improve efficiency and temperature control for the occupants. New 22-inch wheels have been designed to reduce drag, and an updated suspension system is said to improve smoothness. Beyond that, however, the overall design language shared between the two stays the course. The cabin sees a few enhancements, including a Dynamic Glass Roof that can be electronically tinted, as well as a redesigned user interface projected on those large screens.

Second-gen R1 models all benefit from a new and, from the sound of things, simplified electrical system, now reducing the total number of ECUs from 17 down to seven. Fun fact: This new layout, according to Rivian, means a removal of 1.6 miles and 44 lbs. worth of wiring per vehicle.

Perhaps more pertinent to consumers is the Rivian Autonomy Platform, designed in-house and providing more driver safety and assistance capabilities. Using 11 cameras, five radars and AI, it is reportedly 10 times more powerful than the outgoing system, operating better in low-visibility situations. This system comes standard on all vehicles, but a premium version will expand capabilities further. New lighting elements are mounted forward and aft, including adaptive headlights that adjust to dark roads and oncoming traffic.

And most pertinent to prospective buyers is the price. The R1T starts at $69,900, while the R1S starts at $75,900. Dual-Motor models are available now, with Tri-Motor units to be sold later summer and Quad-Motor variants soon after.
