Ford Mustang Turns 60; Special Package Available for Order
April 17, 2024Just two years away from collecting the minimum Social Security payments, the Ford Mustang is turning 60 today. April 17 marks six decades since the original Mustang’s unveiling at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and, as anticipated, Ford has today debuted a special package to celebrate this milestone.
Aptly named the 60th Anniversary Package, it will be exclusive to the GT Premium trim; however, buyers will be able to opt for either the coupe or convertible body styles, and decide whether they want the Mustang’s automatic or manual transmission.
Perhaps the most standout feature is the set of 20-inch wheels. These five-spokers are finished in gray, contrasted by brighter machined faces and a red center cap. That red carries over to the exclusive badges found on the fenders, still retaining the “5.0” signature, and the rear decklid, proudly displaying “60 Years” underneath the GT name. The side profile is underscored by exclusive rocker panel stripes, available in either Vermillion Red or Iconic SIlver.
The front end is largely the same, now sporting a unique mesh design in the grille workings and silver-accented nostrils. The tri-bar headlights feature a smoked housing, borrowed from the Nite Pony Package, deepens the contrast
As for the paint, that’s not Oxford White you’re seeing. Instead, it’s a throwback Wimbledon White, a color offered on the first Mustang and now offered exclusively with this package. It’s joined by Race Red and Vapor Blue, two colors you can equip on your typical Ecoboost or GT. Those opting for either of those finishes will see silver mirror caps, reminiscent of old school chrome, while Wimbledon buyers see a pair of body-matched caps.
The interior can be had in either Space Gray, Carmine Red or Black Onyx. Not much else is changed here, barring a serialized plaque on the passenger dash, again mimicking the “60 Year” design.
Ford is limiting production of the 60th Anniversary Package to just 1,965 units, a callback to the first official production year of the Mustang (and because you can’t make 1,964 ½ models). Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but that might not stop diehard collectors from calling up their local dealership for their spot in line. Orders for the package open up this summer, with examples arriving at dealerships later this year.
We’ve driven the all-new Mustang and really dig this modern take on a time-honored nameplate. So much so that we decided to give it “Best Sport Coupe” and “Best of the Year” in our 2024 Drivers’ Choice Awards. And given our recent Track Test of the high-performance Dark Horse, we can confirm this seventh-gen model is no one-trick pony.
