Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Hunts Down Five American Lap Records
February 11, 2025The 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is on tour, taking on some of America’s most prominent race tracks and hunting down new lap records in the process.
Perhaps making the feat more impressive is the driver lineup. Instead of picking a single, performance-pedigree backed, lightweight jockey of a driver to tackle each course, Chevrolet handed helmets to four different drivers from their staff. Not to undermine their abilities, of course, but this adds another layer to this display of force– the new ZR1, while an instrument in the hands of a seasoned pro, is still plenty capable in the hands of a willing driver.
And those four drivers were Bill Wise, Lead Performance Engineer, Chassis Controls; Brian Wallace, Lead Vehicle Dynamics Engineer; Chris Barger, Lead Development Engineer; and Aaron Link, Global Vehicle Performance Manager. Again, solid credentials for putting down solid times.
Starting those times is Wise, who ran a 1:52.7 on the Watkins Glen Long Course, a configuration that spans 3.37 miles of curvy, forested New York tarmac. A run at Wisconsin’s Road America, a 14-corner, 4.048-mile long serpentine of paved asphalt, was completed in 2:08.6 with Wallace behind the wheel. Following the performance was a dance at Georgia’s Road Atlanta, with Barber on the pedal for a 1:22.8 tango with all 12 turns, requiring 2.54-miles worth of footwork. The final act was produced by Link, tackling two different configurations of Virginia International Raceway. The full course, which covers 3.27 miles and no less than 18 turns, was done and dealt with in 1:47.7; the Grand Course, which is even fuller than the Full Course with 24 turn-ins and 4.20 miles of road, saw a ‘Vette-shaped blur cross over the checkered line in 2:32.3.
Chevrolet posted a video of the feat on their YouTube channel, which is worth the 7 minutes of your time if you’re a Corvette and/or motorsports fan. Each driver discusses the track they were in charge of conquering and the angle of attack taken with the ZR1. Going a step further, the record setting laps have been posted in their raw entirety as well. We’ve embedded Link’s VIR Grand run below, but the rest can be found in the ZR1 YouTube playlist.
The model used is a pre-production sample, a ZR1 outfitted with the aero-advantaged, carbon-ladened ZTK Performance Package. Stiffer springs and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R ZP tires work in tandem with the additional downforce, making as much of the twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8’s 1,064 horsepower and 828 lb-ft usable.
Orders for the 2025 Corvette ZR1 open up later this month, starting at $174,995 for the 1LZ Coupe, add another $10,000 for the hardtop convertible. Assembly begins soon at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky.
