We’ve had plenty of fun in BMW’s Z models over the years, including the most recent Z4 models; but, we’ve always felt as if one key component was missing: A manual transmission.

That’s about to change, as BMW has officially announced a third pedal option for this fun roadster. The 2025 BMW Z4 will receive a six-speed manual transmission, exclusive to the M40i trim.

That means a “row it yourself” pairing with the M40i’s 3.0-liter inline-six engine, which makes 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Sounds like loads of fun already, but BMW didn’t stop there with the upgrades. The Z4 M40i “Handschalter” (German for “hand shift,” the internal working name of the project) package also includes a retuned suspension tuning, a staggered wheel setup and new color options inside and out.

Starting with the underpinnings, the manual Z4’s suspension has been tweaked with unique auxiliary springs located on either axle, as well as a reinforced anti-roll bar clamp up front. The electronic control of the rear dampers and steering software have also been updated, joined by a retuned traction control set for the manual Z4. The M40i still comes standard with variable sport steering, M Sport brakes, adaptive M suspension and an M Sport rear differential.

Exterior styling is mostly the same, though the staggered wheels will give it away if you know what you’re looking for. They include 19-inch alloys in the front and 20-inchers in the rear. The Handschalter pack will also throw in some extra high-gloss black trim, red brake calipers, and an exclusive San Remo Green metallic paint job. There’s also an optional Frozen Deep Green metallic, available at a special package price; and buyers can still select from seven other shades of metallic lacquer or Alpine White non-metallic. The interior can be had in five flavors of Vernasca leather, like a Cognac color with black piping.

So, how much is a 2025 BMW Z4 M40i “Handschalter” going to cost you? Well, we technically don’t know yet, as pricing for the 2025 Z4 is yet to be confirmed; however, the manual transmission package will cost an additional $3,500 on top of the M40i price. Currently, 2024 M40i’s start at $67,295 with destination, and we don’t anticipate pricing to deviate too far from that.
