The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is making a second pass, retaining its status as a subcompact luxury sport sedan while packing additional standard equipment and revised powertrains.

Arriving March 2025, two models will be available for consumers at launch. Both all-wheel drive, the 228 xDrive and M235 xDrive will make it onto the market before the two-wheel drive 228 sDrive, slated for a mid-year arrival.

All models are powered by the same twin-turbo, 2.0-liter inline-four engine; the 228 xDrive is tuned for 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, ramped up to 312 horses and 295 lb-ft in the M235 xDrive. In either case, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic delivers power to the all-wheel-drive system. Revised suspension and other stability managing components round out the on-road experience.

The Gran Coupe sees little growth; the unchanged 105.1-inch wheelbase supports 0.7-inch longer body, now 179.2 inches overall. Similarly, while the overall shape remains constant, the bodywork has changed expressions front and rear. Reshaped grille work and air intakes upfront are bookended by vertical side pockets and new headlights. The trailing edge of the Gran Coupe sees new lighting elements and few lines. If badging is too obvious, the 228’s tailpipes are hidden into the rear, while the M235’s quad-tip exhaust is on full display.

The phrase “driver-centric cockpit” is used, rather aptly, to describe a number of cabins from various automakers, and BMW’s front seat experience fully lives up to it. The Gran Coupe is no exception; the leather-free design, instead opting for the more sustainable “Veganza” material, incorporates BMW’s curved display, aiming two screens, one for gauges and one for infotainment, at the driver. These digital units will utilize BMW Operating System 9, the latest version of the software.

Leaning into the “luxury” part of “sport luxury” is a now-standard Harmon/Kardon sound system, bumping along with 12 speakers throughout the cabin. Other standard features include a wireless device charger, and auto-dimming mirrors inside and out. A new Digital Key Plus feature allows locking and entry via smartphones and smartwatches, should a physical key be too much of a burden.

The 2025 BMW 228 xDrive Gran Coupe will serve as the initial entry point for to-be buyers, starting at $42,775 with destination attached. It’s followed by the M235 xDrive Gran Coupe, starting at $50,675; and once available, the two-wheel-drive 228 sDrive Gran Coupe will start at $40,775.
