Volkswagen ID. Buzz Recalled for… a Rear Bench that’s Too Wide
May 5, 2025Automotive recalls are nothing to scoff at, especially when that faithful letter detailing a mass fault discovered in your vehicle finds its way into your hands. Owners of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz will be getting letters soon regarding a recall of a most peculiar sort: The third-row bench is just too wide.
You can read it for yourself on the NHTSA website. The Volkswagen ID. Buzz has a third row that’s wide enough to fit three passengers, yet is designed and equipped with enough seat belts for only two occupants.
Jokes aside, this is a serious enough issue to warrant a recall, as it violates federal automotive safety codes, specifically number 208, “Occupancy Crash Protection.” And the fix, provided to owners free of charge, is fairly simple. New trim will be installed by dealerships to adjust the width accordingly. Letters are expected to start mailing out on June 20, 2025, and we’re certain dealerships will start adjusting their in-stock microbuses asap. A total of 5,637 units are affected; and fortunately, there have been zero reported incidents of field claims regarding this wide rear bench. Volkswagen has always marketed the ID. Buzz as being able to carry six or seven occupants, dependent on the second row seating style, with its rear-most row always capped at two passengers.
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz was one of this year’s Drivers’ Choice Awards winners, taking home one of our “Best EV” trophies.
