Dings and Things
Every nick and scratch on a car just makes us cringe. But, Pat Goss has some cool new products to help repair our woes. 3M has some brand new products for you do it yourselfers. And here to demonstrate and to tell us about it is Jen Cook from 3M. Jen welcome to Goss’ Garage.
JEN COOK: Thank you for having me.
PAT GOSS: First tell us about the graphics that you have here.
JEN COOK: Well we have a brand new product called the 3M custom image kit. And what is does is pulls in about three different technologies from within 3M into one kit. It allows you to put whatever image you would like onto the surface of your vehicle. So the graphic’s film that we use allows you to cut out your image, whichever image you want to choose and places the image into the clear coat by lightly scuffing the clear coat. So whatever color your vehicle is it just looks like a matte finish of that image. It’s a really cool process.
PAT GOSS: Alright now we’re talking about in the clear coat, can it be removed?
JEN COOK: We are and yes it can. We have a scratch removal system, which works great for buffing the entire image out, so whenever you choose to remove your image you can pull it back out with our scratch removal system.
PAT GOSS: OK, alright. Now, paint restoration you’ve got a kit here.
JEN COOK: We do. We have a kit that utilizes three of our compounds. We have a scratch remover plus, which is a yellow compound that you use with a yellow pad. We have a shine restorer compound which is a blue compound that you use with a blue pad. And then we have our synthetic wax protection, which is a white compound used with a white pad. So very simple for the do-it-yourselfer. Everything is color coded. We also include a piece of our trizact abrasive, which is a proprietary 3M technology that removes light scratches in the clear coat and is followed by these three steps to bring back the shine.
PAT GOSS: Now you did a section here and we can see the comparison and it’s pretty dramatic.
JEN COOK: Yes, so your car is older, you know it sits out in the sun a lot, maybe you just have some light scratches from going through a touch car wash, this is a great system for removing all of those light swirl marks or the dull look the sun rays create on your vehicle.
PAT GOSS: All right now, also one of the universal problems that we see all over the place, headlights that have gone cloudy.
JEN COOK: Yes and it’s dangerous. When your headlights start getting cloudy, it becomes a safety problem. You as the driver can’t see the road and people that might be out walking at night. So our lens renewal system removes any haziness caused by the sun usually. That’s damaged caused by the sun and a combination of car wash chemicals. So we’re sanding that completely off the surface and buffing back the lens and removing all that, so you can see clearly.
PAT GOSS: OK is that difficult to do or easy?
JEN COOK: Very easy all of the steps are used on your house hold drill so as long as you’re comfortable using a drill you can go ahead and do that process.
PAT GOSS: OK sounds great. Jen thank you! And if you have a question or comment, drop me a line. Right here at MotorWeek.
