We’re also still grappling with a new naming scheme at Infiniti, but by now we’re all well-aware of their Q50 midsize sedan. And a fun one it is. Now, for 20-16, Infiniti’s broadening its appeal even more with a wide range of new engine choices.

Let’s start off with a bang, the Q50 Red Sport 400 will be the most powerful variant, featuring a 400 horsepower 3.0 liter twin turbo V6. That same engine also comes as the Q50 3.0t, where it puts out a mere 300 horsepower.

ZACH MASKELL: “This is Infiniti’s new VR engine. It’s based off the VQ, but it’s built with 85 percent new parts. Don’t worry though, it still puts out that great exhaust note that you’re used to hearing with the popular VQ engine.”

JOHN DAVIS: We felt great, instant power from this new V6, with both versions providing more than enough for spirited commutes.

Also new is the Q50 2.0t, which grabs power from a 208 horsepower 2.0 liter turbo 4. This is more the daily driver, obviously, but it doesn’t totally suck all the fun out.

A Q50 Hybrid comes later with 360 net horsepower from a 3.5 liter V6 and electric motor combo. All powertrains us a seven speed automatic, with all-wheel drive an option.

Infiniti’s Direct Adaptive Steering system is also revamped. Available on the Hybrid and 3.0 liter V6 models, Infiniti claims the fully electronic, steer-by-wire setup provides greater feedback and precision. Call us purists, but we still prefer the Q50’s standard hydraulic steering setup.  

On sale now, the Q50 range starts around $35,000. Hybrids start at $48,000.
