While full-size, body-on-frame luxury SUVs clearly don’t get as much buyer interest as they used to, they still appeal to a core affluent family demographic. One such Goliath is the second-generation Infiniti QX.

Now lower, wider, longer, and lighter than before, the QX’s new design is modern and eye-catching. Its face is defined by a thick-set front-end and Infiniti’s prominent double-arch grille.

A large greenhouse and 20- or 22-inch wheels punctuate the QX’s profile, while its squarish rear-view dons a huge remote-access power lift gate and a smartly-concealed tow hitch.

Under its hood lives a stronger new 400-horsepower 5.6-liter V8, shared with the new M, and tied to a new seven-speed automatic.  The combo boasts an 8500-pound towing capacity while offering 14 percent better fuel economy than before.

The QX’s more rigid ladder frame provides enhanced ride comfort while reducing noise and vibration.  Add to that an available Hydraulic Body Motion Control system for a truly well-composed driving experience.

Along the varied roads around Louisville, Kentucky, we experienced the QX’s smooth and confident road manners. With Motion Control, this big SUV takes corners like a much smaller vehicle.  Body roll is dramatically reduced.

 With room for up to eight, the QX’s Executive Jet-style interior is even more luxurious than before. There’s a new advanced Climate Control system and a more sophisticated Bose stereo. New too is standard four-camera Around View Monitor. The family-friendly third row has power fold and recline, which help make the QX’s cargo room beyond cavernous.

The 2011 Infiniti QX goes on sale this summer starting under $58,000, or about the same as last year.
