The Honda Civic first saw a hybrid version 22 years ago for the 2003 model year. Fuel economy rivaled that of the popular Toyota Prius and, for a time, the Civic Hybrid would even become the second best-selling hybrid vehicle in the country. But times change and the hybrid left the Civic lineup for the 10th-generation in 2015 and we haven’t seen another one since.

Now a decade later, the hybrid officially returns for 2025. And we recently hit the roads for a First Drive in Montreal, Canada…which felt appropriate considering the Civic Hybrid will be built in Honda’s Alliston, Ontario plant.

The entire Civic lineup sees a refresh for 2025 and that starts with some very small changes to the exterior. The bezel around the headlights is now body colored and the lower fascia changes slightly. Plus sedans have darkened tail lights.

All 2025 Civics will now be powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. The two lower trims—LX and Sport—will see 150 horsepower with a traditional CVT.

But we’re hear to talk about the hybrid so moving up to Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid, means the addition of two electric motors to give you 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque with their eCVT. Honda says this powertrain should see some impressive fuel economy numbers: 50 city, 47 highway, & 49 combined.

“The powertrain in this hybrid is so good. The additional power, the additional torque makes this so much nicer to drive on the daily. Overall, this powertrain is pretty quiet, and because you have the additional power, you do not have to push down on the throttle as hard, which means that the powertrain isn’t working as hard. And so overall, it’s way quieter when you have to do some sort of acceleration.

Everything comes together so well in this vehicle from the suspension, because in this sport touring hybrid, it’s really soft and incredibly comfortable for a vehicle at this price point, which is just over $30,000. So really impressive there. And of course it’s still a Civic.

So it’s still very sporty to drive. the steering is very light and playful. Just really, really fantastic effort from Honda.”

There are 4 drive modes to choose from: Eco, Normal, Sport, & Individual for you to customize. Plus you can adjust the 4 levels of regen braking with paddle shifters.

And while our driving experience was limited to the sedan, the hatchback will also be available with the same hybrid powertrain for the very first time.

Things are very familiar on the inside except there is now an available gray interior to choose from. Sport Hybrids see a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and central display, moonroof, and heated front seats. Bump up to Sport Touring for a 10-inch digital display and 9-inch touchscreen with Google Built-In, wireless smartphone integration, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.

Plus some tweaks to the door supports have been made to account for the IIHS’s updated side impact test.

Honda Sensing comes standard and has seen some improvements as well.

Pricing for a 2025 Honda Civic will start at $25,345 for base LX. Opting for a Sport Hybrid will set you back $29,845 while the loaded Sport Touring comes in at $32,845.

The 2025 Honda Civic sedan is arriving in dealers this month with hatchbacks coming later this summer.

We’ll have a full road test review on the all-new Hybrid Civic in the near future but until then, keep it locked…right here on MotorWeek!
