The Toyota Tundra pickup has received a new Capstone trim level for the 2022 model year, boasting a blend of luxury features and a hybrid powertrain.

The Capstone is claimed to be the new flagship of the Tundra lineup; as such, it is standard equipped with many of the premium features offered on other Tundra models, such as automatic running boards and BedStep. The Capstone is offered in one body configuration: CrewMax, which comes with a 5.5-foot bed.

It is powered by the newest i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain: a twin-turbo V6 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, with a unique motor generator within the bellhousing. Together, the Capstone is capable of 437 horsepower and 585 lb-ft. of torque, and features a maximum towing capacity of 10,340 pounds. During towing scenarios, the hybrid system provides additional power and torque; in city driving, it improves efficiency and aims towards a quieter ride.

The cabin is mounted to the frame via hydraulic cab mounts, which aid in ride quality. Inside, the Capstone is equipped with a 10-inch color heads-up display, 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 14-inch infotainment screen. The infotainment system incorporates Toyota’s Drive Connect service, which allows for enhanced voice controls and connectivity.

Occupants rest on Semi-Aniline leather-trimmed seats with plush accent materials. Other design accents include dark American walnut with an open-pore finish; a special Capstone logo, surrounded with walnut inlay, illuminates when the doors are opened. The Capstone is also the only Tundra to feature acoustic glass on the front doors, which allows for greater sound deadening.

All Tundra grades come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. This suite of features includes Toyota’s Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Emergency Steering Assist, Lane Departure Alert, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams, and more. Safety Sense 2.5 has been upgraded over the previous iteration with greater low-light pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, oncoming vehicle alerts and pedestrian alerts when performing a turn.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone is expected to arrive soon. While exact pricing details are yet to be announced, the current top-Tundra, the 1794, starts at $59,385 after destination fees. The Capstone will likely be similarly priced.
