The lineup of Ram pickups is about to gain a plus one for the 2023 model year– a new heavy duty version of the Rebel trim.

The 2023 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel is looking to take on the factory-ready off-roader segment– familiar territory for Ram pickups– by providing consumers with a suite of terrain-tackling upgrades right from the get-go. It’s a spinoff of the popular Ram 1500 Rebel.

So, how does Ram plan to please the ever-growing off-road and overlanding crowd? For starters, the Heavy Duty Rebel comes packaged with standard 20-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch off-road tires, behind which is a unique off-road suspension setup. A rear air suspension setup is also available. The back end also hosts a limited-slip differential and rear electronic locker. Additional skid plating armors the undercarriage, particularly at the fuel tank and transfer case.

Powering the Heavy Duty Rebel is a standard 6.4-liter HEMI V8, putting down 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque through the 8-speed automatic transmission. Also available is a 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel I-6, pumping out 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque, now sent to a 6-speed automatic. Ram claims a towing capacity of 16,870 pounds and a payload capacity of 3,140; for those going with the HEMI V8, an optional, factory-installed WARN Zeon-12 winch is available, rated at 12,000 lbs.

Beyond the unique aesthetics is a fairly typical Ram 2500 Crew Cab, flanked by a six-foot, four-inch box. The interior can be outfitted in three different seating options, including a cloth bench or bucket seat, a Bristol leather bench of bucket, and a full Natura Plus leather bucket. A 360-degree camera system is included, though the 12-inch digital gauge cluster is optional, as are a variety of safety and convenience features, such as blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, auto headlamps and a digital rearview mirror.

The 2023 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel will start at $68,940, which includes the $1,895 destination charge. Expect to see it on sale in the fourth quarter of this year.
