Gymkhana 2022 Shreds Through Florida in 862 Horsepower Subaru Wagon
Hoonigan: A name synonymous with drifting, burnouts, stunt driving and tire slaying. They’re back for Gymkhana 2022: Vacation Shred, starring Travis Pastrana and an 862 horsepower wagon.
That wagon is none other than a Subaru Family Huckster, said to be loosely based on the 1983 Subaru US Ski Team GL Wagon, now featuring US Skid Team graphics. Truth be told, we’re not sure which one is the other’s co-star, as both Pastrana and the Huckster are equally impressive.
Set in South Florida, Gymkhana 2022 opens up with a nasty base jump from Pastrana which didn’t end so well– a broken pelvis. From there on out, it’s all adrenaline pumping action full of sideways skids and a dizzying number of degrees spun. While we can’t exactly get into Pastrana’s anatomy to see what makes him such a daredevil, we can inspect the Family Huckster.
This beast of a wagon features active aero elements, an all-wheel drive system with a sequential transmission, rear mounted radiators and, at its heart, an EJ based 2.3-liter Subaru Motorsports RallyCross engine. This 4-banger ravs out to 8,000 RPM, full-sending it with the aforementioned 862 horsepower. Top speed is clocked at 165 mph. Other touches include carbon fiber roof racks and rear window louvers, playing into those 80’s vibes; however, not as much as the cassette player left for those throwback mixtapes.
The video includes drifts, a drag race, a helicopter jump and even a faux Subaru dealership ad. It’s the best kind of random that keeps you guessing; but, you know, maybe you should just see for yourself.
“This Subaru wagon is the most fun car I have ever driven, and I’m addicted,” said Pastrana. “This was (a) great chance to be even more creative with the stunts and it was great to have some of my favorite people make some cameos. I hope everyone watching enjoys it as I did. And what a car, I really tried to break it, but it just kept going. This whole thing was so epic!”
Our “Over the Edge” guy Greg Carloss recently spent some time with another Hooner, Rhys Conklin, to get a taste of the drifting lifestyle. While Conklin isn’t pulling Pastrana-level stunts (yet), it’s an incredible look into the world of drivin’ sideways.
