If adding a performance trim to a model is an option, BMW is one of those brands that’s almost guaranteed to offer it; and in the case of the iconic European automaker, it’s the letter “M” which denotes it. That’s why we’re excited to get a glimpse of the 2024 X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition utilities.

The X5 M is self-described as a Sports Activity Vehicle, with the X6 M marketed as a Sports Activity Coupe. In either case, both M’s live up to the “Sports” side of things by now being offered exclusively as Competition models.

Spearheading performance is a new TwinPower Turbo V8 engine paired up to a 48 volt mild-hybrid system– the first high-performance models from BMW M GmbH to feature it. The electric motor is integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission’s housing. Maximum output is rated at 617 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, electronically limited to a top speed of 155 mph or 177 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package. Hitting 60 mph from a stop can be done in 3.7 seconds, and the standard M Sport exhaust system will let all eight cylinders roar the entire time.

BMW’s M xDrive all-wheel drive system is standard equipped, as is an Active M Differential on the rear axle. To further assist in handling, these models are equipped with reworked dampers that constantly adjust to driver inputs and road conditions. Body rigidity, particularly in the rear, has been increased, and even the transmission rests on a hydraulically damped mount. M Compound brakes are fitted as standard, consisting of six-piston calipers upfront and single-piston calipers in rear– painted in either blue, red or black, per the customer’s choosing.

Both models rock a fresh new look with “crisp, expansive surfaces,” more closely related to BMW’s current design language. That new DNA brings in slimmed headlights, updated aero elements and, of course, the latest rendition of the iconic kidney grille. The latter is finished in all black, a theme that is carried throughout the profile. Both models get a more pronounced diffuser in back, surrounding the pair of 4-inch twin exhaust tips. At launch, BMW claims customers will be able to select from 50 paint shades, including metallic and non-metallic tones.

While the performance and the looks are important, a large portion of BMW’s clientele will care as much, if not more about the interior. As expected, cabin amenities are abundant, starting with BMW’s Curved Display. It’s a driver-centric unit comprising the instrument panel and infotainment panel, housed behind one glass surface. This unit helps disguise the newly designed central air vents, now narrower and better integrated. A new ambient light bar sits in the front passenger area for a little more flair, and a head-up display also comes standard. The carbon fiber paddle shifters are one of many garnishes that radiate a performance vibe, contrasting the plush Merino leather.

The 2024 BMW X5 M Competition will start at $123,295, which includes the $995 destination charge. The X6 M Competition starts a little higher at $128,195. Production starts in April 2023 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

There’s a lot more to unpack with these models, but these are some of the major highlights. Stay tuned to MotorWeek for a future Road Test!
